Increased Reward for Helpers
Nitin Gadkari announced an increase in the reward for people helping accident victims, from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000. He stressed the importance of giving quick medical help during the critical “Golden Hour” after an accident.
Government Support for Accident Victims
The government will also cover hospital expenses up to ₹1.5 lakh for the first seven days for accident victims on both national and state highways.
Good Samaritan Scheme
The Good Samaritan scheme, launched in 2021, rewards people who help accident victims in the Golden Hour. A good Samaritan is someone who helps without expecting anything in return.
Encouraging Quick Action
Gadkari said the increased reward encourages more people to help, as quick medical help can save lives. Road accidents in India have caused over 13 lakh deaths between 2012 and 2022, many of which could have been prevented with timely care
