Chillai Kalan is the coldest and toughest phase of winter in Kashmir, lasting 40 days from December 21 to January 31. During this time, temperatures drop well below freezing, and heavy snowfall covers the region in a beautiful but harsh white blanket.
The term “Chillai Kalan” comes from Persian, meaning “major cold.” The Dal Lake partially freezes, and people stay indoors, keeping warm around kangris (traditional fire pots). While the extreme weather makes life difficult, it also offers chances for winter sports like skiing in Gulmarg.
Culturally, Chillai Kalan plays an important role in shaping Kashmir’s lifestyle. Traditional winter foods like harissa (a meat-based dish) and dried vegetables become essential, showcasing the resilience of the locals. Despite the challenges, Chillai Kalan’s unique beauty attracts tourists who come to experience Kashmir in its purest form. It’s a season of endurance, tradition, and natural wonder.
