Johannesburg witnessed a grand celebration as devotees gathered for the opening of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Hindu temple and cultural complex on Sunday.
Hindu Community Comes Together
Although Hindus make up less than 2% of South Africa’s population, the faith remains dominant among Indian-origin residents. Mahant Swami Maharaj, the 92-year-old BAPS spiritual leader, traveled from India to lead the dedication rituals at dawn.

A Hub for Faith and Culture
BAPS spokesman Hemang Desai emphasized that the temple aims to promote cross-cultural and interfaith dialogue while serving as a community center for prayer and networking.

Grand Celebrations and Future Plans
A colorful Nagar Yatra procession on Saturday, featuring music and dance, marked the temple’s arrival. The site will offer courses in arts, dance, and religious studies alongside BAPS’s ongoing charitable efforts.
