Why the Siliguri corridor should become a union territory
The Siliguri corridor, also known as the “Chicken’s Neck” is a narrow stretch of land in West Bengal which connects mainland India with the north eastern states.

This small sized land is important for India’s economy, security and connectivity. And because of its vulnerability, people believe it should be made a union territory, directly controlled by the Central government.

Apart from the northeast, this corridor also serves as a gateway to Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh. It is the line that links India with these countries and plays a crucial role in the success government’s “Act East Policy”. The corridor also provides important rail and road connects on the Indo-Bangladesh border, make it vital for trade and diplomacy.

There are also some internal issues. People of North Bengal complain about the negligence of their region by the state government. It has potential in tea production, tourism, medical plants and agriculture, but the government neglects it. The Gorkhas , Adivasis and Koch- Rajbongshis feel ignored by and they demand better political representation, while some people even call for separate statehood in the North Bengal region.

Addressing these challenges, Siliguri as a Union Territory could be a solution to these challenges. The Central Government would ensure better security management, development and attention to all communities. It would also strengthen India’s position against China and also reduce the impact of illegal immigration and insurgency.

The Siliguri corridor may be a small land strip, but is India’s lifeline to Northeast India and neighbouring countries. Turning it into a Union Territory could help safeguard India’s national interests and ensure that this land remains strong and secure for the future.
