1. Two HMPV Cases Detected in Bengaluru
Health officials reported two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Bengaluru, involving an eight-month-old and a three-month-old child. Both children, with no travel history, tested positive amid growing concerns over HMPV following a surge in cases in China.

2. Karnataka Confirms and Handles the Cases

The Karnataka Health Department confirmed the eight-month-old’s case and informed the Union Health Ministry. The three-month-old was treated and discharged. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) identified these cases during routine surveillance. However, experts are still determining if the detected strain matches the one spreading in China.

4. NCDC and Global Monitoring of HMPV

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced active surveillance of respiratory infections. It is collaborating with international agencies to track the virus and stay updated on global developments.

5. HMPV Described as a Seasonal Virus
Globally, experts described HMPV as a seasonal virus causing flu-like symptoms, mainly affecting young children and the elderly. Dr. Atul Goel, DGHS, explained that HMPV symptoms often resemble the common cold and advised the public to practice respiratory etiquette and general precautions to limit its spread.

6. HMPV Surge in China Raises Concerns

In China, HMPV cases are reportedly overwhelming hospitals, but officials have downplayed the situation, calling it a “seasonal recurrence.” This response echoes their initial handling of COVID-19 in 2020. The outbreak in China has prompted India and other countries to increase monitoring of respiratory illnesses.
