Newly-elected Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sparked a political debate on Monday when she carried a bag to Parliament featuring the word “Palestine” and a watermelon symbol, widely recognized as a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians. This move comes as part of her outspoken criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza since the conflict escalated in October last year.
Priyanka Gandhi, attending her first Parliament session as the MP from Kerala’s Wayanad, has consistently criticized Israeli military operations, labeling them as “genocidal actions.” Last week, she met Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, Charge d’Affaires of the Palestinian Embassy in New Delhi, reinforcing her position on the issue.
Priyanka Gandhi has been vocal in her condemnation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In July, she accused him of overseeing the “genocide in Gaza” and called on the international community to take action. “It is no longer enough to speak up for the innocent civilians being wiped out day after day in Gaza. The world must hold the Israeli government accountable,” she said.
She further accused Netanyahu of “barbarism” and criticized Western governments for supporting his administration. “He calls it a clash between barbarism and civilization. He is absolutely correct, except that it is his government that is barbaric,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Many view her act of carrying a Palestine-themed bag as an expression of solidarity with Palestine.. However, it has also intensified political polarization, drawing praise and criticism across the political spectrum.
