India’s Sporting Highlights of 2024

  • T20 World Cup:

India won its second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after 17 years, beating South Africa by seven runs in an exciting final in Barbados. This victory also marked a great end to Rahul Dravid’s time as head coach.

  • Chess Olympiad:

India claimed historic gold in both the Open and women’s sections at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest.

  • Paris Olympics:

India secured six medals, including Neeraj Chopra’s silver in javelin, Manu Bhaker’s historic two bronze medals in shooting, and Aman Sehrawat’s wrestling bronze. The men’s hockey team also bagged bronze, giving a memorable farewell to goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh.

  • Paris Paralympics:.

India recorded its best-ever Paralympics with 29 medals, including seven gold. Avani Lekhara defended her 10m air rifle gold, Sumit Antil set a Paralympic javelin record, and Mariyappan Thangavelu became the first Indian to win medals at three consecutive Paralympics

  • World Chess Champion:

D. Gukesh became the youngest-ever world chess champion, defeating Ding Liren and breaking Garry Kasparov’s long-standing record.

  • Grand Slam Victory:

Rohan Bopanna won the Australian Open men’s doubles, becoming the third Indian to claim a men’s doubles Grand Slam.

  • Asian Table Tennis Championship:

India won three medals, with Manika Batra, Ayhika Mukherjee, and Sutirtha Mukherjee securing the first-ever women’s team medal since 1972.
