Goa celebrates its Liberation Day on December 19 every year to mark its freedom from Portuguese rule. For 451 years, Goa remained under Portuguese control, even after India gained independence in 1947. The situation changed in 1961 when the Indian Armed Forces launched “Operation Vijay” to liberate Goa, Daman, and Diu.
The operation, which lasted 36 hours, involved coordinated efforts by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Facing mounting pressure, the Portuguese finally surrendered on December 19, and Goa became a part of India. This day symbolizes the victory of determination and unity in achieving independence.
Goa Liberation Day is celebrated with great pride and gratitude. The day begins with tributes to freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for Goa’s independence. Parades, cultural programs, and flag-hoisting ceremonies take place across the state.
