Devastating Earthquake Hits
A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet early Tuesday, killing at least 100 people and causing widespread destruction. Tingri County, the epicenter, witnessed the collapse of over 1,000 buildings, with neighboring Nepal and northern India also feeling the tremors.
Aftershocks Intensify Panic
The quake, recorded at 6:35 am, was followed by two aftershocks—4.7 magnitude at 7:02 am and 4.9 magnitude at 7:07 am. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake’s depth at 10 kilometers, while China measured the magnitude at 6.8.
Tingri County Suffers Major Damage
The earthquake struck 75 kilometers northeast of Mount Everest, affecting 62,000 residents in Tingri County. Chinese media reported 62 injuries and extensive structural damage, with debris and wreckage scattered across streets.
Himalayan Region Faces Ongoing Risk
The collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates drives the region’s geological activity. This same collision caused the 2015 Nepal earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people and caused massive devastation
