If Vidya Balan is the showstopper of Begum Jaan; Gauahar Khan, Chunkey Pandey and Pallavi Sharda are her most worthy partners. Pandey as a cold-blooded contract killer will remain in your memory for some time. The 134-minute long Begum Jaan has Vidya Balan in good form, but it lacks as a complete story. It shies away from delving deep into the theme, but you may appreciate its documentary-like feel.
In fact, the film begins with an elderly woman offering her body to a group of potential rapists in order to protect a younger woman in 2016’s Delhi suggesting the power dynamics haven’t changed much since Independence.
Dialogues are very good, especially the line at interval “Maheena giinne toh hamen khoob aata hai saab”……. Performance wise Vidya Balan as Begum Jaan is first rate. Good performance is the main strength of this film. The climax is very heavy. Background Music is not much good. The director Srijit Mukherji has failed to take advantage of the theme and of course the time of the story. There are very few movies in Indian cinema which uphold the very essence of cinema as a medium of expression.
As it is said picture can say a thousand words, then “Begum Jaan” tells you about woman, freedom, history, humanity home and many heart touching issues of a non speaking society. It’s a masterpiece for a sensible cinema lover. Audiences who are there for entertainment please don’t critic this movie. It’s a must watch for its portrayal of feminism and power packed performances.
My rating for this movie is 3.5/5 stars.
